Four Communities Recognized with Community Spirit Award

Four Nova Scotia communities are recipients of the 2023 Lieutenant-Governor’s Community Spirit Award:

  • Greenville, Yarmouth County
  • New Waterford, Cape Breton Regional Municipality
  • Pugwash, Cumberland County
  • Sambro, Halifax Regional Municipality.

“I am delighted to recognize communities that have gone above and beyond to foster long-term engagement, provide support to residents, and preserve their unique history,” said Lt.-Gov. Arthur J. LeBlanc. “Their commitment to positive change and collective growth is inspirational and I look forward to presenting the awards over the coming weeks.”

The Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage administers the award program. Recipients are chosen by a selection committee based on evidence of citizen engagement, civic pride and a positive outlook on the future of the community.

“Recipients of this year’s Lieutenant-Governor’s Community Spirit Award show us the diversity and resiliency of communities right across the province,” said Pat Dunn, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. “These four communities are being celebrated for their efforts to preserve their rich history, show their community spirit, and their dedication to making life better for their citizens.”

Quick Facts:

  • ceremonies in the four communities will be held later this year
  • the community spirit award program was established in 2007 by then lieutenant-governor Mayann Francis
  • 50 communities have received the award since 2008
