Loan forgiveness works differently for undergraduate degrees students or for students graduating with a diploma or certificate:
Nova Scotia Student Loan Forgiveness Program: permanent disability
The Nova Scotia Student Loan Forgiveness Program can eliminate Nova Scotia Student Loan debt for eligible borrowers who study at Nova Scotia Community College or Nova Scotia universities. If you studied at a reduced course load because you have a permanent disability, your loans can be forgiven for more years of study.
Students who need more time to complete their degree, diploma or certificate because of their permanent disability can have their loans forgiven for more years of study.
- You must qualify as a student with a permanent disability under Nova Scotia Student Assistance criteria.
- When you complete your program, you must have studied full-time at a reduced rate between 40% and 60% of a standard course load.
- You must complete your degree within 10 years of starting it, or complete your diploma or certificate within 6 years of starting it.
How to apply
You don’t have to apply to be considered for the Permanent Disability Student Loan Forgiveness Program. All students are automatically assessed for eligibility under the Nova Scotia Student Loan Forgiveness Program when they graduate.
