Nova Scotia School Garden Resource Guide
The Nova Scotia School Garden Resource Guide is a tool to help teachers and school staff design, resource and build a garden that can be used to meet curriculum outcomes. This guide is suitable for multiple subjects and grade levels, and is also available in French.
School gardens are a valuable educational tool and lessons learned in the garden can have long-lasting effects on student wellbeing. Gardening encourages active engagement and accommodates a wide variety of learning styles in a hands-on, healthy, outdoor setting.
The Nova Scotia School Garden Resource Guide includes:
- a 76-page resource document with background information on gardening
- information about how to start, maintain and harvest your garden
- information about preparing soil for plant growth
- information about which plants to grow
- guidance on sourcing materials and plants
- instructions for planting various types of plants
- connections to curriculum outcomes for primary grades to grade 12 as well as suggested activities
