Description of Organization:
Canadian Blood Services is a national, not-for-profit, arm's-length organization that manages the supply of blood and blood products in all provinces and territories outside of Quebec. Canadian Blood Services also oversees the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network, and manages national organ waitlist registries. Additionally, the organization has a national mandate in organ and tissue donation and transplantation (OTDT) through its amalgamation with the Canadian Council for Donation and Transplantation (CCDT) in 2008. Canadian Blood Services operates 43 permanent collection sites and more than 20,000 donor clinics annually. The provincial and territorial Ministries of Health provide operational funding to Canadian Blood Services and PT Ministers of Health act as the organization's corporate members. The federal government, through Health Canada, is responsible for regulating the blood system. CBS was incorporated on February 8, 1998 pursuant to Part II of the Canada Corporations Act. The corporate members are the provincial and territorial Ministers of Health of all the provinces and territories, except Quebec. These members play a role similar to shareholders. Under this structure, the CBS Board of Directors is comprised of 13 Directors, as follows: 1 Chairperson, 4 Directors from members representing BC and Yukon, Prairies, NWT and Nunavut, Ontario and Atlantic; 2 Directors from the general public representing consumers, donors, patients and other interests; and 6 Directors providing medical, scientific, technical, business and public health expertise.
