Round (Unskinned) Furbearer Carcass: Permit-To-Sell

Who Needs This Permit?
Any licenced fur harvester who wants to sell certain furbearing species in the round (that is, the whole carcass, unskinned) in Nova Scotia.

Note: This permit applies to species for which the carcass must be turned in.

Any of the Local or Area Offices of the N.S. Department of Natural Resources. (See Offices, N.S. Department of Natural Resources.)
Application Process:
Application can be made at the nearest Local or Area Offices of the N.S. Department of Natural Resources.

The applicant will normally be asked to give their fur harvester code number.

Office staff will certify that the carcass has been submitted for examination on a particular date. Additional information may be requested (such as, date of kill and location of kill. Then, a carcass collection tag is attached, and the number recorded.

This permit requires the purchaser to present the carcass with the tag attached, the pelt and the permit, to any Area Office of the N.S. Department of Natural Resources, at which time the pelt will be stamped for approval to export. This must occur before exporting but not later than 2 weeks after the close of the season for that species.

Additional Information:
  1. For certain species, a condition of the licence may be that the fur harvester will be required to return the carcass for scientific purposes. This allows for the entire animal to be sold and the carcass to be submitted by the fur buyer.

  2. This is one of the mechanisms which allows the Department to keep accurate track of how many animals are harvested from certain species about which there is a concern from a conservation point of view.
