Register a death
Funeral directors need to submit required documents (Registration of Death and Medical Certificate of Death) to Vital Statistics for all deaths that take place in Nova Scotia. They need to submit the documents within 48 hours of a death. After Vital Statistics receives the documents, the death is registered.

Funeral directors need to be registered as Division Registrars of Death with Vital Statistics to collect and submit details about the deceased. Funeral directors also need to hold a valid Funeral Director's Licence from the Nova Scotia Board of Registration of Embalmers and Funeral Directors and be registered by Vital Statistics.

How long it takes
It should take 4 to 6 weeks for Vital Statistics to register the death. It can take longer if more information is needed.
