Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month – Volunteer Registration
Volunteers from the agriculture industry are needed to support Grade 3 students in learning about the farming industry and agricultural careers. Help connect students with agriculture by sharing your story in an interactive and engaging way!
Canadian Agricultural Literacy Month takes place each year in March with the goal of connecting students with farmers and other agricultural professionals. Learning where their food comes from is a topic that every student will engage with. These speakers are recruited by the Department of Agriculture to visit Grade 3 classrooms to tell students the story of their farms and agricultural careers, using pictures, videos and possibly artefacts from their farms or businesses.
Farmers and Agriculture Professionals will visit grade 3 classrooms to talk about their careers; what they enjoy and challenges they face. Farmers and Agriculture Professionals will plant mystery seeds with the students. A lesson plan will accompany the mystery seed kit to serve as a resource for teachers along with a video.
Provided with the program are:
- customizable PowerPoint presentation
- mystery seed kit with all necessary supplies for growing plants included, as well as instructions for planting and care
- mystery seed video
- staff support to answer questions
This program will take place in late February and March each year.
Farmers and Agriculture Professionals should take into consideration:
- your preferred school and the classroom may not be available
- each classroom presentation will take approximately 45 minutes
- support for travel expenses is available if you travel outside of your community
- the program is intended for grade 3 but other grades in elementary school can be accommodated

Nova Scotia farmers and agriculture producers, other professionals that work in agriculture
How to apply
- Determine if Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month program is a good fit for you and your schedule.
- Complete the application form by 15 January.
- The Department of Agriculture will review all applications and match each volunteer with a teacher(s)/school.
- The Department of Agriculture will provide school/teacher(s) contact by 15 February . Each volunteer will need to contact the teacher(s) directly to arrange the visit.
- Visits to take place between 15 February and 31 March.
How long it takes
You will be notified within 5 business days that your application has been received. The Department of Agriculture will attempt to match each farmer or agriculture professional with a school and teacher in their preferred area.
Cost
There is no cost to participate in this program.
