Fur Harvester Licence

Who Needs This Licence?

Anyone who wants to trap, snare, hunt, or possess any furbearing animal in Nova Scotia. This licence is only available to residents of Nova Scotia.

Furbearing animals include: beaver, otter, muskrat, wild mink, raccoon, bobcat, fox, fisher, or weasel.

Any of the Local or Area Offices of the N.S. Department of Natural Resources.
Application Forms & Process:

Applicants must be at least 16 years old to hold their own Fur Harvester Licence and must hold a valid Wildlife Resources Card with appropriate Fur Harvester certification (FQ or FT).

Applicants who have never held a Fur Harvester Licence must successfully complete an approved Fur Harvester Education Course before they can purchase a Fur Harvester Licence. Previously licenced fur harvesters who have not purchased a Fur Harvester Licence in the last 4 years also must also take this course (unless they have already taken the approved course and can provide the appropriate proof of completion).

Applications must also purchase a Wildlife Habitat Stamp prior to purchasing a Fur Harvester licence.

$21.17 plus HST
Expiry & Renewal:
This licence can generally be purchased any time after August 1st and is valid through to March 31st of the following year. Seasons and Bag Limits vary by species. Refer to the Nova Scotia Hunting & Furharvesting Summary of Regulations, available online at: http://novascotia.ca/natr/hunt/regulations/.
Related Requirements:
Licences are available immediately to individuals who possess the appropriate requirements.

These licences / permits from the N.S. Department of Natural Resources may also be required in addition to the Fur Harvester Licence
  1. Wildlife Export Permit;
  2. Round (Unskinned) Furbearers: Permit-To-Sell;
Additional Information:
  1. Any fur harvester is required to return a Fur Harvester Report Card which is available in the NS Hunting & Furharvesting Summary of Regulations and online at: http://novascotia.ca/natr/harvests.

  2. Any fur harvester may be required to collect and submit certain carcasses or parts thereof for scientific purposes.

  3. Any fur harvester must also obtain a Wildlife Export Permit to export a pelt or skin outside the province.

  4. Any fur harvester wishing to sell a furbearing animal in the round, and where the carcass of that species must be turned in, must present the carcass to the N.S. Department of Natural Resources area office to receive a Round (Unskinned) Furbearers: Permit-to-Sell.
