ECONOMIC RENEWAL--ECOTOURISM CONFERENCE AT WHITE POINT ----------------------------------------------------------------- EMBARGOED UNTIL SATURDAY, JANUARY 14 The growing popularity of ecotourism is spurring efforts by the Nova Scotia tourism industry and communities to develop and promote activities to tap into this rapidly emerging market. A five-day Ecotourism Conference, sponsored by the Nova Scotia Economic Renewal Agency, through Tourism Nova Scotia, will provide a forum to educate tourism operators and community organizations about ecotourism and to discuss its future development in Atlantic Canada. The conference begins Monday at White Point, near Liverpool. Organized by the Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia (TIANS) and White Point Beach Lodge, the conference is aimed at the private sector, community groups, and governments. Workshops will focus on the principles of responsible travel; nature, culture and adventure tourism; marketing opportunities; and sustainable tourism practices and green management. Economic Renewal Minister Ross Bragg said: "Nova Scotia's natural beauty and unspoiled environment positions us to capitalize on the rapidly growing ecotourism market. Ecotourism is the fastest growing tourism sector but we want to ensure that this industry is developed in a safe and responsible manner. We're very pleased to sponsor this timely conference which will help make Nova Scotia a premier ecotourism destination." Don Wilson, president of TIANS said, "If ecotourism, cultural heritage and adventure travel in Atlantic Canada are to prosper, it is the responsibility of the community, local operators, government and non-government agencies to partner together and ensure that the products are environmentally sensitive and contribute to the conservation of natural and cultural resources." International speakers James MacGregor and Leslie Jarvie, who have experience in tourism development and conservation on four continents, will headline the presentations. The conference runs until January 16-20. -30- Contact: Linda Laffin, ERA Communications, 902-424-8922 Doug Fawthrop, White Point Beach Lodge 902-354-2711 Mary Comfort, TIANS 902-423-4480 lm January 13, 1995
