ECONOMIC RENEWAL--THE PINES PHASE TWO IMPROVEMENTS ------------------------------------------------------------------ Visitors to The Pines in 1995 can thank the glorious summer of 1994 for their comfortable surroundings this year. Last year's excellent season at Digby's classic resort hotel has enabled the implementation of Phase Two of a major renovation plan. A variety of improvements will prepare The Pines for what is anticipated to be an equally successful 1995. Following the refurbishment of the resort's nine deluxe cottages five years ago, the 20 standard cottages will now be renovated under the supervision of new maintenance engineer, Danny LeBlanc. The units will be fully re-painted inside and all beds will be replaced. New televisions and new draperies will also be added. Bathrooms will be refurbished and cottages will receive in-room coffee service. Finally, furniture and upholstery will be improved and repaired and the one-bedroom cottage will be totally renovated. Improvements will also be evident at the golf course. The pro shop and the ladies' locker room will be re-carpeted, and the latter will receive new vanities, lights and upgraded furniture. Cosmetic improvements, including lighting, are slated for the main lounge and foyer. Improvements are also planned for the men's washroom, including new showers, and next year all entrances to the clubhouse will be upgraded. On the course, a new canteen, built near holes seven and 11, will serve light food and refreshments and provide washroom facilities. Further alterations are intended for areas of the main hotel, including the new lobby bar, the main lobby and the dining room. The latter will add more casual bistro-style food and beverage to its service. Outside, walking trails and the children's playground are to be upgraded and plans include a new liner and filtering system for the swimming pool. Pines Manager Maurice Thiebaut, said the $200,000-plus improvements are a necessary step to maintain the hotel's international reputation. "We have to become more competitive if we are to remain a flagship resort and keep up the standards people have come to expect," he said. He added the hotel and golf course benefit the local area by attracting visitors and so the renovations also indirectly benefit the region. "Our ambition is not just what is good for The Pines, but for Digby and the surrounding area," said Economic Renewal Minister Ross Bragg.
