HEALTH--U.S. EMERGENCY MEDICINE EXPERTS MEET IN NOVA SCOTIA ----------------------------------------------------------------- A group of 11 United States emergency medicine experts is in Nova Scotia this week to review the history, progress and future of emergency medicine and to make recommendations to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Health Minister Ron Stewart, as honorary chair of the committee, is hosting the three-day event. Dr. Mike Murphy, commissioner of Emergency Health Services Nova Scotia, is a special guest of the committee. "These people are definitive experts in all aspects of emergency medicine and are considered international celebrities in this field," says Dr. Stewart. "Their presence here gives us the opportunity to present our plans and ideas for Nova Scotia's system. We can get feedback and consultation of the highest quality." He added that the report of this group will chart the course of emergency health services well into the next century, and their deliberations will eventually impact on emergency medicine systems throughout the world. The Health Department is also taking advantage of their presence to provide them with information on the health system in Nova Scotia and opportunities for physicians in the province. During their stay, contacts are being fostered with hospitals and institutions represented by the delegates. Local sponsors, most notably, Tri-Star Industries of Yarmouth, have been given this opportunity to showcase their products to delegates. Tri-Star, one of the top ambulance manufacturers in Canada, is supplying the Department of Health with 150 ambulances over the next 22 months to replace Nova Scotia's aging fleet. Delegates arrived in Halifax yesterday and were given a tour of Province House before their first dinner meeting. Formal discussions continue today and tomorrow. -30- Contact: Chris Hansen 902-424-5925 trp Oct. 18, 1995
