HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION--SOLICITOR HIRED ------------------------------------------------------------ The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission has hired its first full time solicitor. Maureen Shebib was selected from a pool of over 70 applicants, and will assume her new post Jan. 15,1996. The hiring is an implementation of one of the recommendations of the Marshall Inquiry and is designed to enhance the independence of the Human Rights Commission from government. Ms. Shebib is a North Sydney native who received her undergraduate education at Mount Saint Vincent University and graduated from Dalhousie Law School in 1984. She has been a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society since 1985 and spent most of her years as a practising lawyer at Dalhousie Legal Aid, Halifax. Since 1994 she has been a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, and has served as program coordinator of the Guelph-Wellington Sexual Assault Program and Sexual Assault Care Centre since 1993. She has been active in a wide range of community activities throughout her career and has served as a member of the tribunal panel for both the Canadian and Nova Scotia Human Rights Commissions. Ms. Shebib has been actively involved as a member of the equality rights panel of the Court Challenges Program; the Legal Education Action Fund; Nova Scotia Persons with Aids Coalition; Halifax Women's Housing Cooperative; North End Parent Resource Centre and Women's Employment Outreach. -30- Contact: May Lui 902-424-4111 trp Dec. 06, 1995
