LABOUR--FIRE PREVENTION BURSARY PRESENTED ------------------------------------------------------------ Wanda Lee Jensen of Hemford, Lunenburg County, has been awarded the W.J. Scott Fire Prevention Memorial Bursary. The award was presented today at Province House by Labour Minister Guy Brown and Natural Resources Minister Don Downe, in Halifax. The bursary is a one-time $750 award given to a student whose parents are involved in the fire service. It is sponsored by the Association of Canadian Fire Marshals and Fire Commissioners, represented in Nova Scotia by Fire Marshal Bob Cormier. The bursary works on a rotating basis, moving from one province or territory to another each year. "It gives me great pleasure to present this bursary to help support a young Nova Scotian who is working towards a better education and a brighter future," said Mr. Brown. The admissions and awards office at the University of Toronto is responsible for choosing the award recipient. Ms. Jensen is a first-year student at Dalhousie University. She is studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in psychology. She graduated from New Germany Rural High School with an impressive record in academics and extra-curricular activities. Ms. Jensen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Jensen. Mr. Jensen is a long-time firefighter with the Hemford and District Volunteer Fire Department in Lunenburg County. Mr. Brown noted the tremendous contributions made by all members of the fire service across the province. "They provide a vital service to Nova Scotians. They save lives, reduce costs, and provide leadership in education and prevention. The fire service give so much to our communities. This is our opportunity to give something back." The bursary is in memory of W. J. Scott, one of Canada's most distinguished firefighters. During his 25 years of public service, he was an effective advocate for fire service training, motivated by a strong commitment to improve fire services. The Department of Labour includes the office of the fire marshal.
