Selected by the Council of Ministers of Education-Canada, the minister's participation is being funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. As an associate member of the 10-member organization, Canada has participated in every Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) conference since 1986. The theme of this year's conference is "Teachers' Learning in a Changing World." Discussions will also focus on educational development in the region. Mr. MacEachern has attended two previous SEAMEO conferences and is pleased to be leading this year's delegation. "This is an excellent opportunity for Canada to strengthen its economic and cultural ties with Southeast Asia," said Mr. MacEachern. "Participating in the conference also enhances Nova Scotia's reputation as a leader in the area of education and demonstrate our ability to contribute, along with the rest of Canada, to educational development in Southeast Asia." Following the SEAMEC, Mr. MacEachern will attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting on Manpower in Manila, the Philippines. The minister will join the Canadian delegation, headed by Lloyd Axworthy, Minister for Human Resources Development Canada, for two days of discussions before returning to Canada. -30- Contact: Lisa Bugden 902-424-2795 trp Dec. 29, 1995 ------------------------------------------------------------ LISTING OF SEAMEO ASSOCIATE AND MEMBER COUNTRIES Member Countries of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO): Brunei Darussalam Cambodia Indonesia Lao PDR Malaysia the Philippines Singapore Thailand Vietnam Associate Member Countries: Australia Canada France Germany New Zealand
