LAURENT On Aug. 22, 1994, the Coast Guard vessel Louis St. Laurent became the first Canadian ship to reach the North Pole. By no means an easy task. One of the many pressure ridges of ice they had to break through was about 15 metres thick! Join Capt. Phil Grandy at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. as he recounts the adventures experienced by both ship and crew during the historic voyage. ------------------------------------------------------------ KAYAKS AND BAIDARKAS-THE ESSENCE OF THE SIMPLE BOAT Kayaks from the North Atlantic and baidarkas from the North Pacific. Both are practical and simple in design but they are two of the most refined boats in history. On Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, Gerry Gladwin of Whynot Boats will give an illustrated talk which includes a brief history of the vessels, where they can be used and what Nova Scotia has to offer the experienced or novice kayaker. Admission to all events is free but donations to the food bank are accepted. -30- Contact: Gerry Lunn 902-424-8793 jlw Jan. 8, 1996
