ECONOMIC RENEWAL--NEW BOOK TELLS OF SUCCESS STORIES ------------------------------------------------------------ Economic Renewal Minister Robbie Harrison today launched a new booklet titled "Entrepreneurs in Nova Scotia - A Collection of Success Stories." The publication, unveiled at the National Economic Development Conference, highlights a variety of small and medium sized businesses that are flourishing around the province. "The entrepreneurs in this book are just a few of many Nova Scotians who are going into business for themselves," said Mr. Harrison. "We're tremendously proud of these entrepreneurs. Their stories are the stories of emerging businesses in this province." He said the businesses showed self-sufficiency, creativity, and resilience. Some of them are already international exporters and all contribute directly to their local economy. Many of the businesses got a kick-start using the Nova Scotia Economic Renewal Agency's Community Business Loan Program (CBLP). The program is available for business start ups and expansions, as long as the entrepreneur meets with conditions that include providing owner equity. More than 300 new businesses have started by using the program in the past approximately 18 months, creating and maintaining more than 1500 jobs. "Success stories like these are being dreamed about every day throughout Nova Scotia. It's up to community economic developers to breathe life into as many of them as possible," Mr. Harrison said to about 130 economic development delegates. "Entrepreneurs in Nova Scotia" will be available from each of the Access Nova Scotia centres and the Economic Renewal Agency's business service centres in Amherst, Bridgewater, Halifax, Kentville, New Glasgow, Port Hawkesbury, Sydney, Truro and Yarmouth. It will also be distributed to each of the province's regional development agencies, and the public libraries. -30- Contact: Steve Warburton 902-424-0927 trp Feb. 08, 1996 - 11:25 a.m.
