FISHERIES--FISHERIES PROTESTERS ----------------------------------------------------------------- Nova Scotia Fisheries Minister Jim Barkhouse said today that the apparent impasse between the federal fisheries minister and protesters occupying federal offices remains a serious matter. "We are exploring every possible option to resolve differences between protesters, representatives of fishing organizations and the minister's office. Following meetings with leaders of fishing organizations last week at Province House, I have been calling Ottawa on a daily basis. The time to appoint a mediator is fast approaching," Mr. Barkhouse said. "Mr. Mifflin has indicated that he is prepared to discuss several contentious issues, including licensing policies, quotas and management plans, but questions about his intentions to move forward with the Fisheries Act have not been answered. Certainly more time for full and frank debate is required and it would be helpful to know what the government intends to do," said Mr. Barkhouse. He said he has offered South Shore MP Derek Wells and DFO's senior regional officials assistance from the Province, "and we are prepared to convene meetings or mediate if requested to do so." -30- Contact: Diane Kenny 902-424-0308 trp Feb. 21, 1996 - 4:47 p.m.
