EDUCATION/CULTURE--EXHIBITION-"Wildlife in Wood" ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Mary E. Black Gallery of the Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design will host an exhibition entitled, "Wildlife in Wood". The show runs from Friday, March 15, to Saturday, May 4, at the gallery, 1683 Barrington St., Halifax. Over 100 hand-crafted items, ranging from examples of decoys to decorative wildlife carvings, will be presented by the Nova Scotia Wildlife Carvers and Artists Association (NSWCAA). Three skill levels - novice, intermediate and open class - will be represented as well as some examples of wildlife paintings. The aim of the association is to promote wildlife carving and art by displaying works and demonstrating their various skills throughout Nova Scotia. Wildlife carving is a traditional craft form practised throughout Nova Scotia. Originating out of the need to decoy wildfowl for hunting purposes, decoys are now commonly made for the pleasure and the self-expression involved. The observation of wildlife and the skills of capturing an accurate and life-like representation attracts many crafts-people, carvers and painters and is one of our most popular past-times. The Mary E. Black Gallery, which specializes in exhibitions relating to craft and design, is part of the Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design and is operated through the cultural affairs division of the Department of Education and Culture. -30- Contact: Centre for Craft and Design 902-424-4062 trp Feb. 22, 1996 - 4:25 p.m.
