HUMAN RESOURCES---GOVERNMENT WON'T APPEAL DECISION ----------------------------------------------------------------- Human Resources Minister Jay Abbass said today that the government has decided it will not join an appeal to a recent Supreme Court ruling regarding the government's wage restraint program. "The Public Sector Compensation Restraint Board has filed a notice of appeal. I understand this action was taken by the board in order to keep its legal options open. The government has decided not to participate in any appeal. We have communicated that decision to the board," the minister said. "Government's original intention was to protect certain public sector employees who made less than $25,000 per year. The board, albeit in good faith, excluded a number of employees from the legislation's protective provisions. This was subsequently overturned by the Supreme Court. In the interest of treating our employees fairly, we are accepting the court's decision." -30- Contact: Margaret Murphy 902-424-4880 trp Apr. 11, 1996 - 4:28 p.m.
