EDUCATION/CULTURE--"FROM THE GROUND UP" ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Mary E. Black Gallery, Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design, 1683 Barrington Street, Halifax, will host an exhibition entitled, "From the Ground Up", from May 17 to July 13. The exhibition can be viewed Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. This exhibition was juried by Gloria Hickey and Peter Powning for the Nova Scotia Potters Guild. This travelling exhibition is sponsored by the Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design, as well as Shaw Brick - a member of the Shaw Group Ltd., University College of Cape Breton, Fireworks Gallery, Jennifer's of Nova Scotia and Jost Vineyards. In celebration of Hands on Clay - 1996, the Year of Earth and Fire, the Nova Scotia Potters Guild put out a call for entries for a juried ceramic exhibition and 39 ceramicists were chosen to display their work, with many taking the opportunity to display more personal expressions in clay. Those exhibiting include several accomplished potters and educators, as well as a handful of student ceramicists, some of whom are making their gallery debut. The students are from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, which has contributed significantly to craft in Nova Scotia. The exhibition aims to display a wide range of ceramic creations from a diverse group of ceramicists, all of whom share a feeling of enthusiasm for the disciplined practice of ceramics. The Mary E. Black Gallery, which specializes in exhibitions relating to craft and design, is part of the Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design and is operated by the provincial government through the cultural affairs division of the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Culture. -30- Contact: Christopher Tyler 902-424-4062 trp May 13, 1996 - 1:00 p.m.
