EDUCATION/CULTURE--"WRITERS GRANTS" ----------------------------------------------------------------- Four Nova Scotian authors have been awarded grants by the cultural affairs division of the Department of Education and Culture, through its Assistance to Established Writers program. Recipients are: Don Aker, for Home Schooling: One Family's First Year; Bruce Armstrong, for Historic Sites of Nova Scotia; Phil Thompson, for HMCS Venture: Lost by Fire; and, David Swick, for Thunder and Ocean. Now in its 13th year, the program provides monetary awards to professional writers working on projects in which trade publishers have expressed interest. Applications are reviewed by an advisory panel consisting of representatives from the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia, the Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association, the Atlantic Provinces Booksellers Association, and the Nova Scotia Library Association. The deadline for the next competition is Oct. 1, 1996. Applications are available from the cultural affairs division, Department of Education and Culture, P. O.
