NATURAL RESOURCES--HUNTER EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR OF THE YEAR ----------------------------------------------------------------- The 1995 Nova Scotia hunter education instructor of the year winner is Granville Oakley of Cheverie, Hants County. The Department of Natural Resources has presented this award since 1994 to recognize individuals who have made an outstanding effort to promote hunter education in the province. "With more than 250 volunteer hunter education instructors across Nova Scotia working through non-profit service clubs, this is an excellent opportunity to acknowledge their contributions to the hunter education program and to the overall safety of Nova Scotians during hunting season," said Natural Resources Minister Eleanor Norrie. There were only five minor accidents and no fatalities during the 1995 hunting season. Since becoming an instructor in 1980, Mr. Oakley has made significant contributions to the program. He has led a group of 15 instructors, perfected the instruction of the Canadian Firearms Safety course, was a founding member and first president of the Nova Scotia Hunter and Firearms Safety Education Instructors Association, and is a master instructor for the Canadian Firearms Training course. The three 1996 regional winners have also been announced and each will receive a plaque to recognize their contribution to the hunter education program. The central regional winner is David Harrison, Sr. of Springhill, John MacIsaac of Port Hawkesbury is the eastern regional winner, and Edward MacInnes, Middleton, was chosen in the western region. The 1996 instructor of the year award will be chosen from the three regional winners, who will be announced later this summer. -30- Contact: Gerry Joudrey 902-424-4445 trp June 11, 1996 - 10:25 a.m.
