HOUSING/MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS--PROPERTY ASSESSORS RECEIVE AWARD ----------------------------------------------------------------- Nova Scotia property assessors have received national recognition. The Department of Housing and Municipal Affairs is the first provincial government department ever to receive an award from the Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC). The department was awarded a Presidential Citation recognizing its significant contribution to the growth and enhancement of the appraisal profession. "The department is a strong supporter of professionalism in the appraisal industry," said Housing and Municipal Affairs Minister Jim Smith. "We are very proud of this award." The Housing and Municipal Affairs Department has enjoyed a positive partnership with the AIC in advancing educational and professional standards of assessors. The department's assessment division is responsible for assessing all property in Nova Scotia. Residential and commercial assessors must complete the Appraisal Institute of Canada's four-year program in property assessment which is administered through St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish. Assessors are also required to attain a Canadian Residential Appraiser (CRA) and Accredited Appraiser Canadian Institute(AACI) designation respectively. The Appraisal Institute of Canada is the national society of professional appraisers. The institute is dedicated to serving the public interest by advancing high standards for members with AACI and CRA designations. -30- Contact: John MacKay 902-424-5671 lm July 17, 1996 - 9:25 a.m.
