EDUCATION & CULTURE--COMMUNITY COLLEGE COORDINATES TOUR ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Nova Scotia Community College is breaking new ground in its continuing effort to provide "hands on" learning opportunities for its students and members of the community-at-large. When the proposal was given to the NSCC's customized training division to plan a national lecture tour for world renowned psychiatrist, Dr. William Glasser, it seemed only logical for the college to make the commitment to undertake the project. It is Dr. Glasser's contention that people who behave irresponsibly need to be taught a more responsible way to behave without the use of coercion. The lecture series, entitled "Change by Choice," will be of particular interest to those professionals in such fields as business, education, psychology, social work, and corrections. In fact, say organizers, all who manage, teach, counsel or supervise others will benefit from the workshop. Dr. Glasser will visit five Canadian cities with this tour: Dartmouth, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg. To assist with organizing this event in these cities, the NSCC has established partnerships with various other organizations, including: the Canadian Guidance Counselling Association, the Counsellor Training Institute, the Adlerian School of Psychology, Montreal; Humber College, Toronto; Red River College, Winnipeg; and Vancouver Community College. "Organizing an event of this nature," said Brad MacDonald, entrepreneurship & small business instructor at NSCC, Annapolis Campus and Glasser project coordinator, "makes it necessary to forge new partnerships with like-minded professionals in other provinces, and allows us to offer our students a valuable learning opportunity as they assist in various aspects of the project. This fall students enrolled in the entrepreneurship & small business program and human services program will assist in assembling participant packages for the various sites and with the daily operations at the project's headquarters at the Annapolis Campus. Students enrolled in the call centre program at Halifax Campus will manage the reservations for the various sites with the upcoming 1-800-line. Also, cooking students from I.W. Akerley Campus will be given the opportunity to provide catering services for the coffee breaks for the Dartmouth lecture. "It will be largely a student-driven project; one that fits with the motivation for this project -recognizing a need and finding a way to fill that need," Mr. MacDonald said. Dr. Glasser will be at the Dartmouth Sportsplex Nov.4, for a one-day seminar. The workshop will provide participants with an explanation of the "whys and hows" of human behaviour which will provide insight into how people make everyday choices. -30- Contact: Brad MacDonald 902-825-6373 mfm Sept. 4, 1996 10:50 a.m.
