EDUCATION/CULTURE--PRINCE EDWARD SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED ----------------------------------------------------------------- The 1996 Prince Edward Scholarship has been awarded to Jim Scott of Halifax announced the Minister responsible for the Technology and Science Secretariat Gerald J. O'Malley today on behalf of Education and Culture Minister Robbie Harrison. "The scholarship represents important community support for an outstanding student and helps to further the study of art and design in Nova Scotia," said Mr. O'Malley. A graduate of Cobequid Educational Centre, who has also attended the Colchester Campus of the Nova Scotia Community College, Mr. Scott was admitted to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the spring of 1993 to study Environmental Planning. He intends to graduate in the spring of 1997. Mr. Scott has already won three important scholarships in 1996; the Shell Canada Resources Scholarship, the Centennial Scholarship and the Endowment Fund Scholarship. Having extensively studied the urban and rural character of Maritime landscapes over the last four years, Mr. Scott is very concerned about environmental, social and economic issues related to the present patterns of growth. He considers it very important to conserve the unique character of the region. In particular, he has comprehensively studied two rural communities that desire economic growth, Tatamagouche and Pugwash. In addition to his outstanding academic work, Mr. Scott is a member of Triathlon Canada's national team and a keen photographer. The Prince Edward Scholarship was recently increased to $5,000 from $1500. It was established by the Government of Nova Scotia to commemorate the visit of H.R.H. Prince Edward to the college in 1987. Nova Scotia students entering their final year in a degree program at the college are eligible to apply. The 1996 recipient was chosen by the Prince Edward Scholarship selection committee from a number of qualified applicants recommended by the college's scholarship committee. The selection committee consists of Joan Stewart, chair; Elizabeth Sodero, Bernard Riordon, and Dr. June Buchanan. Mr. Scott and the winners of the Dr. P. Anthony Johnstone Memorial Fund Entrance Scholarship and the Nova Scotia Women in Engineering Scholarship (1995 and 1996) will be honoured at a reception at the Red Chamber, Province House today (Wednesday, Sept. 25) at 4 p.m. Media is invited to attend. -30- Contact: Elizabeth Ann Macdonald 902-424-5892 trp Sept. 25, 1996 - 1:10 p.m.
