NEWS RELEASE (CNS676) -->> NS MUSEUM--SPECIAL EXHIBIT FOR MI'KMAQ HISTORY MONTH NS MUSEUM--SPECIAL EXHIBIT FOR MI'KMAQ HISTORY MONTH ----------------------------------------------------------------- Jilasi, Welcome, reads the bilingual first line of the special exhibit Our Mi'kmaq Family and Relations at the Museum of Natural History on Summer Street in Halifax. The collection of photographs is on display until the end of October which is Mi'kmaq History Month. The Mi'kmaq Association for Cultural Studies and the museum services division of the Nova Scotia Museum produced the exhibit. The wall of photographs has pictures of everything from Easter pilgrimages, past grand chiefs, and elders conferences, to people playing the Mi'kmaq game of waltes, making baskets, and Christmas parties. Most of the photos were taken in the 1970s and 80s for the Micmac News, published in Cape Breton. "The exhibit is a small but clear demonstration of the power of photos to generate conversation and collective memory," said Sheila Stevenson, manager of museum services, interpretation division of the Nova Scotia Museum. Mi'kmaq people who have viewed the exhibit at the University College of Cape Breton and at the Treaty Day celebrations in Halifax earlier this month were pleased to recognize relatives, friends and important members of the Mi'kmaq community. One visitor from Shubenacadie identified more than half of the people in the photographs as his relatives. -30- Contact: Sheila Stevenson 902-424-6523 trp Oct. 18, 1996 - 10:35 a.m.
