NEWS RELEASE (CNS681) -->> JUSTICE--MEDICAL EXAMINER'S REPORT RELEASED JUSTICE--MEDICAL EXAMINER'S REPORT RELEASED ----------------------------------------------------------------- Chief Medical Examiner Dr. John Butt, today released the report concerning the death of Joseph James Prosper. Mr. Prosper, 40, died Sept. 28, 1996, while in the custody of the New Glasgow Police Department. The results of the autopsy show neither natural disease nor injury account for the death. The death was due to an overdose of a prescribed medication called "Sinequan" (Doxepin), in combination with a high level of alcohol in the blood. The report also stated that on Sept. 28 when Mr. Prosper was searched by police prior to being jailed, he had no medication with him. Approximately two hours later, it was noted his breathing stopped. He was unresponsive. Further assistance and an ambulance were then called by New Glasgow police. Dr. Butt will be sending the file to Chief Judge Joseph Kennedy for a decision respecting an inquest regarding the death of Mr. Prosper. -30- Contact: Office of the Chief Medical Examiner 902-428-4052 trp Oct. 18, 1996 - 2:05 p.m.
