NEWS RELEASE (CNS696) -->> HEALTH--TELEPHONE COUNSELLING FOR PROBLEM GAMBLING HEALTH--TELEPHONE COUNSELLING FOR PROBLEM GAMBLING ----------------------------------------------------------------- A province-wide toll-free telephone counselling, information and referral service for problem gambling will be in place by Dec. 1. "The aim of the service is to provide a readily accessible and professional short-term counselling, information and referral service for problem gamblers and their families," said Health Minister Bernie Boudreau. "Starting Dec. 1, people seeking help need to dial only one number to access a full range of services for problem gambling." The service, which will be available around the clock seven days a week, will also act as an information source for the general public on problem gambling. Calls to the service will remain completely confidential, and callers have the option of remaining anonymous. Counsellors offering help will have advanced skills, experience and training in addiction and mental health counselling. CHC Atlantic, a locally-operated company specializing in counselling services, will deliver the services from its Sydney office, with administrative support in Halifax. Staff will be hired from within Nova Scotia to deliver the services. In addition to telephone counselling, direct referrals can be made to a full range of services depending on the caller's needs. A comprehensive and accessible data base on all aspects of problem gambling will be maintained as part of the service. The service supplements the counselling services already provided through Drug Dependency Services of the Department of Health and will co-ordinate with Drug Dependency to provide ease of entry, continuity of treatment and follow-up on a case-by-case basis. The service is valued at approximately $700,000 over a two year period. -30- Contact: Lori MacLean 902-424-5025 trp Oct. 22, 1996 - 1 p.m.
