NEWS RELEASE (CNS701) -->> COMMUNITY SERVICES--NATIVE FEAST HONORS FOSTER PARENTS COMMUNITY SERVICES--NATIVE FEAST HONORS FOSTER PARENTS ----------------------------------------------------------------- Moose burgers, deer steaks, venison roast, salmon, trout and traditional native breads are all part of the traditional native feast held to honor foster families on the Indian Brook Reserve and the surrounding area. The feast is taking place between noon and 4 p.m. today at St. Catherine's Church on the Indian Brook Reserve, just outside of Shubenacadie. The annual feast is part of National Foster Family Week. "The celebration isn't just for native foster parents and native children in foster care," said Theresa Martin, the coordinator of prevention services. "It's to show respect for all foster families and for the important service they provide to our communities." The feast also provides people from the area a chance to meet with foster parents and agency representatives and to discuss what is involved and what it is like to be foster parents. More than 150 people are expected to attend. The traditional feast is hosted by the residents of Indian Brook who supply and prepare the native dishes. "It is a way of saying thanks and giving something back to foster families," said Rufus Copage, the event's volunteer coordinator. "People don't become foster parents for the attention, but I think they appreciate being recognized for their efforts." National Foster Family Week is set aside each year to thank those who have opened up their homes to children in need. Agencies throughout the province will be holding a variety of activities to celebrate this special week. -30- Contact: John McKee 902-424-3998 trp Oct. 23, 1996 - 9:05 a.m.
