AGRICULTURE/MARKETING--INDUCTION-AGRICULTURAL HALL OF FAME ----------------------------------------------------------------- Agriculture and Marketing Minister Guy Brown has announced that Gordon B. Kinsman of Truro is the 1996 Nova Scotia inductee into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place Wednesday, Oct. 30 in Truro. Mr. Kinsman was nominated by Berries Nova Scotia for his many contributions to strawberry and blueberry industries in Nova Scotia. In 1990, the North American Blueberry Council presented Mr. Kinsman, the only Canadian honored, with the first Calyx Award. Mr. Kinsman joined the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture in 1949 as the first extension specialist for berry crops and was instrumental in development of the first certified strawberry plant program later adopted by other provinces in Canada. Mr. Kinsman developed and introduced the first wild blueberry extension program and encouraged the introduction of new cultural wild blueberry methods. In 1962 he was appointed director of horticulture and biology services and further advanced the berry crop industry in Nova Scotia. As director of marketing, from 1978 until his retirement in 1986, he directed a change in emphasis to a developmental marketing approach with the agri food industry. The Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame honors members of the agricultural community for outstanding contributions to the industry, community and farm organizations. The 1996 inductees from other Atlantic Provinces include Melva Hornbrook, New Brunswick; Robert Peddle, Newfoundland; and R. Elmer MacDonald, Prince Edward Island. -30- Contact: Barb Whiston 902-893-6381 trp Oct. 28, 1996 - 2:25 p.m.
