NEWS RELEASE (CNS732) -->> AGRICULTURE/MARKETING--NEW PRINCIPAL FOR AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE AGRICULTURE/MARKETING--NEW PRINCIPAL FOR AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE ----------------------------------------------------------------- Agricultural and Marketing Minister Guy Brown has announced the appointment of Dr. H. Garth Coffin, of McGill University, as principal of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College effective Jan. 1, 1997. Dr. Coffin succeeds Dr. Leslie Haley who was appointed deputy minister of Agriculture and Marketing April 1, after serving seven years as principal. Dr. Bernie MacDonald continues as the interim principal until January. "I am extremely pleased to be making this announcement and having him as part of the team," said Mr. Brown. "Dr. Coffin is a native of Prince Edward Island and is a graduate of the NSAC. He brings with him extensive experience and expertise in agricultural economics and research," he added. Dr. Coffin is currently associate Dean of Research and Professor of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at McGill. He is also a graduate of McGill University and received his masters and doctorate in agricultural economics from the University of Connecticut. Following completion of his doctorate he worked as marketing analyst for the Natural Products Research Centre in Prince Edward Island. He was appointed director of economic research and secretary to the Canadian Livestock Feed Board, Montreal, in 1971. Since 1979 he has been at the Macdonald Campus of McGill University in a number of positions including associate professor and chairman of the Department of Agricultural Economics and acting dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Science for 1995/96. -30- Contact: Susan Horne 902-424-5719 trp Oct. 31, 1996 - 9:17 a.m.
