NEWS RELEASE (CNS756) -->> EDUCATION/CULTURE--1997 SUMMER READING PROGRAM EDUCATION/CULTURE--1997 SUMMER READING PROGRAM ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Council on Youth Services and the Nova Scotia Provincial Library have announced the theme for the 1997 summer reading program. The program will have a medieval theme and use the slogan "Reading - joust for the fun of it!/La lecture - une armure pour la vie!" Every year public libraries across the province encourage children and people to read during the summer months by offering a variety of special activities such as story times, craft activities, games and author readings. This past summer, about 8,500 youngsters participated in the program which boasted of pirates and hidden treasure using the slogan "Books - the real treasure/Les livres - une vraie tresor." Apart from obvious benefits of reading, one of the incentives used to encourage children to participate in the summer reading program is the annual grand prize draw. All participants in each local library's program received an entry ballot. This year three lucky winners were drawn: Jeremy Burton, Dartmouth; Brie-Ann MacDonald, Glace Bay; and Chris MacDonald, Yarmouth. The recipients each received a basketful of books, a lap desk and other prizes related to the treasure theme. All prizes were donated by H.H. Marshall Newsgroup Ltd. The theme for the summer reading program, as well as the production of promotional materials, is coordinated by the Council on Youth Services and the Nova Scotia Provincial Library. -30- Contact: Sue Dirani 902-424-2475 trp Nov. 05, 1996 - 12:50 p.m.
