NEWS RELEASE (CNS764) -->> HEALTH--UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF CAPE BRETON TO OVERSEE PROJECT HEALTH--UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF CAPE BRETON TO OVERSEE PROJECT ----------------------------------------------------------------- The administration of a community health project to promote improved health status among Sydney-area residents has been assumed by the University College of Cape Breton. Dr. Carl (Bucky) Buchanan, an associate professor at UCCB, will assume direct responsibility for the project on behalf of UCCB and will also chair the local citizens coordinating committee. The project, known as "Act! For a Healthy Sydney," has been in place for just over two years. The project will now become locally run and will refocus on the health concerns of Sydney residents. Programs to better promote healthy lifestyles, the awareness of environmental influences on health and direct measures to address the high cancer rate among Sydney residents will be explored. "The project is a good investment in the health of Sydney and Sydney-area residents," said Health Minister Bernie Boudreau. Recent data suggests that males in Sydney have cancer rates 19 per cent higher than the Canadian average. Females in Sydney have a cancer rate 14 per cent higher than the national average. The provincial Department of Health has agreed to expend $590,000 to sustain funding of the project for the next two fiscal years. -30- Contact: Lori MacLean 902-424-5025 trp Nov. 06, 1996 - 1:45 p.m.
