NEWS RELEASE (CNS769) -->> HEALTH--NEW HEALTH CARE FACILITY FOR NEIL'S HARBOUR HEALTH--NEW HEALTH CARE FACILITY FOR NEIL'S HARBOUR ----------------------------------------------------------------- Residents of Neil's Harbour, Victoria County, will soon benefit from a brand new health care facility. Premier John Savage and Health Minister Bernie Boudreau were in Neil's Harbour this morning to announce the government's commitment to building a new facility in partnership with the community and the Eastern Regional Health Board. "The time has come to replace Buchanan Memorial Hospital with a brand new health care facility," said Premier Savage. "Today's announcement sets the foundation for immediately proceeding with the next planning stage." The Eastern Regional Health Board will participate in a planning process to ensure the health care services provided at the new facility are consistent with provincial health strategies and are responding to the community's health care needs. Professional planners and architects will be engaged so that construction can begin in the spring. The hospital board, community and the Department of Health have worked together over the past few years to discuss the possibility of a new health care facility. Discussions and community input will continue to determine the health care services that the new facility should provide. The community will contribute 25 per cent of the funds, with the province providing the remaining 75 per cent. Total funding required is approximately $5 million. "The community will play an important role in making the new facility a reality," said Mr. Boudreau. "The community's commitment to enhancing health care in Neil's Harbour and the surrounding area is sure to make local fundraising initiatives a success." Buchanan Memorial has served residents from Cape Smokey to Meat Cove since 1953. Governance of the hospital was transferred from the hospital board to the Eastern Regional Health Board on Oct. 1. -30- Contact: Sue McKeage 902-424-3581 trp Nov. 07, 1996 - 10:30 a.m.
