AGRICULTURE/MARKETING--AGRI-FOOD TRADE MISSION TO THE CARIBBEAN ----------------------------------------------------------------- Agriculture and Marketing Minister Guy Brown will lead a seven day agriculture and food trade mission to the Caribbean. Representatives from nine Nova Scotian agri-food companies and the federal and provincial governments will leave Saturday for Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. The mission will focus on developing trade agreements between Nova Scotian and Caribbean food importers and exporters. As well, efforts will be made to generate joint venture opportunities for Nova Scotian food processors. The potential for partnership opportunities in research, education and development between the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and the International Centre of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College will also be explored. "My goal in leading this mission is to establish new partnerships, trade linkages and joint ventures between Nova Scotia and the Caribbean." said Mr. Brown. "I believe that this will bring benefits to all participants." The trade mission follows up on initial business contacts that were made during a Caribbean venture by a Nova Scotia delegation last April. Participants expect to secure contracts from the opportunities identified at that time. They also plan to continue their search for new business opportunities as well. Nova Scotia currently exports over $76 million in agri-food products to more than 60 countries around the world and has well established trade links with the Caribbean on which to build. While in the Caribbean, Mr. Brown will be meeting with local ministers of agriculture and their staff to further encourage this initiative. -30- Contact: Linda MacDonald 902-893-6380 NOTE TO EDITORS: A list of delegation members is available by calling 1-800-670-4357 or 1-902-424-4492. trp Nov. 08, 1996 - 11:35 a.m.
