NEWS RELEASE (CNS824) -->> HEALTH--HOME OXYGEN PROGRAM FOR PROVINCE HEALTH--HOME OXYGEN PROGRAM FOR PROVINCE ----------------------------------------------------------------- Health Minister Bernie Boudreau today announced the province's commitment to move forward with a province-wide home oxygen program. "Today certainly represents a step forward," said Mr. Boudreau. "Quality care must remain our first concern and identified patient needs must have priority within limited financial resources. This is an example of what we can do with the resources of the system when we target them, when we direct them, when we use them appropriately and when we work together." It is estimated that between 400-500 Nova Scotians with chronic respiratory conditions will benefit from a provincial home oxygen program. It is particularly useful for patients with low blood oxygen levels. People currently receiving service will be included in the new program and should experience no change in service. The new program will include a sliding fee scale, much like the one set for Home Care Nova Scotia services. The fee will be an amount that fairly represents the patient's or family's ability to pay for the service. Planning for the new program begins immediately. The department hopes to form innovative partnerships with existing groups. "The province is committed to developing a province-wide program to fix the patchwork and to close a gap in service," said Mr. Boudreau. -30- Contact: Lori MacLean 902-424-5025 trp Nov. 20, 1996 - 12:35 p.m.
