NEWS RELEASE (CNS830) -->> ECONOMIC RENEWAL--MINISTER AND SHIPYARD UNION MEET IN SHELBURNE ECONOMIC RENEWAL--MINISTER AND SHIPYARD UNION MEET IN SHELBURNE ----------------------------------------------------------------- Economic Renewal Minister Richie Mann, along with Team Southwest members, Human Resources Minister Allister Surette, Cliff Huskilson and Richie Hubbard, met Wednesday with union representatives from Shelburne Marine Ltd. to share a confidential status report on the sale of the shipyard. Mr. Mann said that the Economic Renewal Agency is actively seeking potential buyers for Shelburne Marine Ltd. "Today's meeting was part of our on-going close contact with the union regarding the potential sale of the Shelburne shipyard," said Mr. Mann. "We share the same goal and that's getting the yard back in operation and the men and women back to work." David Butler, president of the Marine Worker's Federation, Local 9, said, "We had a very productive meeting. The union's whole purpose is to get our employees back to work as quickly as possible. At our meeting, the minister assured us that he supports the union and we agreed that after the Shelburne Shipyard is sold, an agreement would have to be negotiated between the union and the yard's new owner." Mr. Mann said, "We're continuing to negotiate with interested buyers, and we anticipate the union will continue to play a central role in reaching a satisfactory arrangement regarding the long-term future of the shipyard." The Economic Renewal Agency stepped in to help the Shelburne Shipyard complete two contracts last February when the yard ran into financial difficulty. -30- Contact: Steve Warburton 902-424-8922 trp Nov. 21, 1996 - 4:15 p.m.
