NEWS RELEASE (CNS868) -->> FINANCE--CIGARETTE PRICES RAISED TO COMBAT YOUTH SMOKING FINANCE--CIGARETTE PRICES RAISED TO COMBAT YOUTH SMOKING ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Nova Scotia government and the federal government are teaming up to crack down on youth smoking. Finance Minister Bill Gillis announced in the legislature today, that as of midnight tonight, the cost of cigarettes will be going up by $1.50 per carton. Three other provincial provinces --- Ontario, New Brunswick and Quebec --- are joining the federal government in this initiative. The extra tax means an increase of 70 cents to the province and 70 cents to the federal government. The remainder of the increase is due to the GST.
