NEWS RELEASE (CNS896) -->> HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION--HUMAN RIGHTS DAY ACTIVITIES HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION--HUMAN RIGHTS DAY ACTIVITIES ----------------------------------------------------------------- The 48th anniversary of the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be celebrated jointly by the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, the Canadian Human Rights Commission and the Court of Canadian Citizenship on Dec. 10, Human Rights Day. Justice Minister Jay Abbass, minister in charge of the administration of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act, representing Premier John Savage, and Joseph B. Marshall, president of the Union of Nova Scotia Indians, will raise the United Nations flag outside St. Patrick's-Alexandra School, 2277 Maitland Street, Halifax, at 10 a.m. This will be followed by a proclamation ceremony including a Court of Canadian Citizenship at the Community YMCA, 2269 Gottingen Street, Halifax, at 10:15 a.m. Since 1996 is the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty, those in attendance are asked to make donations to the Metro Food Bank Society as a continuation of the food drive promoted by the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission and the Canadian Human Rights Commission. The minister will welcome guests and reaffirm the province's commitment to human rights by reading a proclamation signed by the premier, urging all Nova Scotians to observe the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty and to promote human rights. The minister will also present a human rights award to the Metro Food Bank Society for its humanitarian efforts towards the relief of hunger in the Metro area. A. Wayne MacKay, executive director, Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, said: "There are clear links between hunger, poverty and human rights as rights have little practical meaning, if you have no food in your stomach."
