PREMIER--PREMIER ON TEAM CANADA TRADE MISSION ----------------------------------------------------------------- Premier John Savage will lead the largest ever Nova Scotia-Team Canada trade delegation which departs this week on a mission to South Korea, the Philippines and Thailand. The two-week mission is designed to expand trade opportunities in one of the world's fastest growing export markets. The mission includes nine premiers and two territorial leaders together with more than 350 business representatives. It is expected the mission will focus on eight primary sectors: agri-food, financial services, education and culture, environment, transportation, energy, information technology, and building supplies and construction. "I am pleased that the prime minister has put particular emphasis this year on educational services. As a result, three Nova Scotia universities as well as the Nova Scotia Community College will be represented on this trip," Premier Savage said. Eight Nova Scotia companies are also taking part in the mission. The contingent includes firms from the fishery resource sector, energy and the service sector. Together with the universities, these firms make up the biggest Nova Scotia Team Canada delegation to date and is the largest among the Atlantic Provinces. Premier Savage said he is pleased that Ottawa has agreed with a suggestion from the provinces that additional small companies be invited to take part in Team Canada. "More than 50 per cent of the companies on this year's Team Canada mission are small or medium sized firms. That's up from just over 30 per cent on previous missions. Making sure that smaller companies have an opportunity to take part is particularly important for provinces such as Nova Scotia." Premier Savage said by participating in Team Canada, many smaller companies are given access to export business that might normally take them four or five trips to accomplish. Since many small to medium firms cannot afford these multiple trips, the federally-sponsored trade mission is an added bonus. -30- Contact: David Harrigan or Ann Graham Walker 902-420-6600 trp Jan. 6, 1997 - 1:35 p.m.
