HUMAN RESOURCES--SUMMER DIVERSITY EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Government of Nova Scotia is now accepting applications for two summer hiring programs under the diversity management unit of the Department of Human Resources. The Summer Employment Diversity Initiative Program is open to aboriginal students, black students, racially visible students and students with disabilities. Through this program students are placed in summer job opportunities in government across Nova Scotia. The Summer Employment Mentorship Program provides work experience for young women pursuing studies in fields where women are under-represented, such as applied sciences, trades, technology and management. The students are matched with female employees within the provincial government who act as mentors to the student. The program provides female students with work experience in their chosen field, along with a role model. "The experience the students gain through these summer programs will assist them in their studies and help them prepare for entering the job market full-time when they graduate," said Human Resources Minister Allister Surette. "The summer programs are part of the government's initiatives to diversify the workforce and encourage Nova Scotians from minority groups and those with disabilities to seek career opportunities with the civil service." Approximately 40 students will be hired full-time for 15 weeks in various government department offices. In previous years, students have worked in administration, clerical, health services, maintenance, technical, scientific and professional positions. To be eligible, students must be enrolled full-time in a university, community college or high school program and will be returning to school in the fall of 1997. Applications must be received by February 17, 1997. Applications and/or resumes should be sent to Summer Employment Opportunities, Diversity Management Unit, Nova Scotia Department of Human Resources, P.O. Box 943, Halifax, NS, B3J 2V9, fax (902)424-0611.
