BUSINESS/CONSUMER SERVICES--MERGING TO PROVIDE EXPANDED SERVICES ----------------------------------------------------------------- With the Registry of Motor Vehicles and Vital Statistics teaming up on the application process for birth certificates, the Department of Business and Consumer Services is improving its service to rural Nova Scotians. "This initiative by two divisions of our department will provide easier access to birth certificates from anywhere in the province," said Business and Consumer Services Minister Sandy Jolly. "Applications will now be accepted at 13 locations throughout Nova Scotia." As of Feb. 10, customers can complete an application for a birth certificate at any of the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) offices throughout the province. Completed applications, accompanied by either cheque or money order for the processing fee, will be forwarded by daily courier to Vital Statistics in Halifax. The applications will be processed and the certificates will be mailed directly to applicants. For urgent requests, certificates can be couriered back to the RMV office for pick up. There is no extra charge for this courier service. "Since new drivers must show a copy of their birth certificate in order to get a licence, this match-up between the Registry of Motor Vehicles and Vital Statistics is logical," said Ms. Jolly. "It is just one more way we're bringing services to Nova Scotians." RMV offices are located in Sydney, Baddeck, Port Hawkesbury, Antigonish, New Glasgow, Amherst, Truro, Bridgewater, Digby, Middleton, New Minas, Yarmouth and Halifax. Inquiries regarding services may be directed to 424-5851, Halifax, 563-2233, Sydney or by calling 1-800-898-7668. -30- Contact: Louise MacDonald 902-424-0394 trp Feb. 7, 1997 - 12:45 p.m.
