EDUCATION/CULTURE--ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS EXHIBIT OFFICIALLY OPEN ----------------------------------------------------------------- Ten Years', a retrospective of the Lieutenant Governor's Design Awards in Architecture, is on display at the Mary Black Gallery, Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design. The show, officially opened by Lieutenant Governor John James Kinley and Mrs. Grace Kinley, features the 1997 award recipients and highlights award winners from the past ten years. In his opening remarks the lieutenant governor expressed his personal interest in architecture and his delight with the work being done on Government House. The restoration, which is currently underway, was awarded a citation for plans designed by G. F. Duffus and Company Ltd. Present at the opening were representatives from many of the architectural firms honoured: Merit Award winners - WHW Architects Inc. for the Air Traffic Control Tower at the Halifax International Airport and Lydon Lynch Architects for the Lynch Residence, Halifax, and Citation winner Brian MacKay - Lyons Architecture Urban Design for House on the Nova Scotia Coast #12. These works, as well as those of the other award winners, show the broad spectrum of building design, and the skilled integration of concept, combining the unique culture of Nova Scotia with the challenges posed by its rugged ocean landscape. The exhibition reveals the creativity used in defining space, and highlights the finest in Nova Scotian architecture. The show runs until April 5, at the Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design, 1683 Barrington Street, Halifax. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Admission is free. -30- Contact: Chris Tyler 902-424-4062 trp Mar. 20, 1997 - 3:15 p.m.
