HEALTH--COMMUNITY HEALTH PROMOTION FUND ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Department of Health is once again offering non-profit organizations the chance to receive up to $5,000 to help support local health promotion projects as part of its Community Health Promotion Fund (CHPF) grant program. "The Community Health Promotion Fund has supported more than 654 community projects across Nova Scotia since its inception in 1990," said Health Minister Bernie Boudreau. "Our continuing commitment to providing the grant program demonstrates our endeavour to encourage new and innovative community projects to promote good health." The projects sponsored by the CHPF address a variety of key health issues such as tobacco reduction, nutrition, active living and mental health. Previous projects from across the province include The Pictou County Survivor's Speaking Out: Educating the Community about Sexual Violence project; Building Stronger Families in the Musquodoboit Valley; Annapolis County Community Kitchens and the Suicide Prevention Education Program -Yellow Ribbon Project - in Cape Breton. The CHFP is funded by the Department of Health and administered through the regional Public Health Services Division. In 1996-97, the CHPF supported 94 projects with funding of approximately $326,647.50 - In the central region $93,261 was spent to support 19 projects - In the eastern region $53,736 was spent to support 18 projects - In the northern region $94,700 was spent to support 27 projects - In the western region $84,949 was spent to support 30 projects "The grant gave our community health council funds to carry out a health needs assessment for the area" says Helen Jenson, a member of the Musquodoboit Community Health Council. "The information gained will provide a basis for the ongoing planning and health promotion throughout the Musquodoboit Valley." Funded projects are selected by regional review committees. These volunteer committees receive all the applications for their area and are responsible for the selection of funded projects. The deadline for application submissions for the Community Health Promotion Fund is May 30, 1997.
