NOVA SCOTIA HOSPITAL--CYRIL KELLY APPOINTED CHAIRMAN ----------------------------------------------------------------- Cyril Kelly, a retired bank executive, has been appointed chairman of the board of management at the Nova Scotia Hospital. He replaces W. James Meredith, who served for six years. "I credit volunteer extraordinaire Ruth Goldbloom for spurring my involvement in the community," said Mr. Kelly, upon taking on the volunteer assignment. "She once told me, You need to get involved to make things happen.'" He said he firmly believes that if you do get involved, you will win and so will the community. Said hospital executive director Anne McGuire: "Often the board's work occurs behind the scenes, and while many people might not be aware of the time and energy individual board members contribute in developing policy and providing support to the hospital, they are crucial to our success. "Their willingness to give of their time is testimony to the value they place on mental health," said Ms. McGuire as she announced Mr. Kelly's appointment today. Mr. Kelly began a career with the Bank of Montreal in 1957 and held various positions of increasing responsibility over the next four decades. He retired in January as vice-president and community executive of the metro Halifax area. In addition to serving as chairman of the hospital's board of management, Mr. Kelly is a member of the finance committee for the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation and a member of the board of governors of Mount St. Vincent University. Other members of the Nova Scotia Hospital's board of management are: Barbara Grant, vice-chair, Anthony Lamplugh, Marilyn Welland, Sandra MacPherson Duncan, E. Douglas Skinner, Eugene Nurse, Helen Hughes, Anne M. Cogdon, Mary Jane Andrews, Herbert V. Zinck and Edward (Ned) LeBlanc. The Nova Scotia Hospital is the major psychiatric referral centre for the province. A fully accredited teaching hospital affiliated with Dalhousie University, it provides a range of programs aimed at improving the mental health of Nova Scotians. Community members, including 150 volunteers, play an essential role in shaping services at the hospital as it promotes an environment that encourages initiative, creativity and teamwork. -30- Contact: Christine Smith 902-464-3136 trp Apr. 9, 1997 - 3 p.m.
