NEWS RELEASE (CNS361) -->> AGRICULTURE/MARKETING--DEVELOPMENTS IN THE AGRI-FOOD SECTOR AGRICULTURE/MARKETING--DEVELOPMENTS IN THE AGRI-FOOD SECTOR ----------------------------------------------------------------- Agriculture and Marketing Minister Guy Brown met recently with federal and private-sector representatives to discuss developing partnerships and new initiatives for Nova Scotia agriculture. In a meeting with officials from the federal Farm Credit Corp., the minister encouraged them to consider the unique needs of Nova Scotian farmers as a priority in the development of programs. They also discussed co-operative ventures in the area of credit services. "We are seriously looking at ideas for joint initiatives that will provide better services to our clients," said Mr. Brown. "In particular, we are looking into sharing some office space with the FCC so that farmers can truly obtain all the agricultural services they need in one location." Mr. Brown also met with representatives of Sobeys Inc., a major Nova Scotia-based food distributor, to congratulate them on efforts to market Nova Scotian and other Atlantic agricultural products. Sobeys is one of many Nova Scotia retailers making efforts to promote regional production. "I am continually looking for ways to encourage people to buy more of our high quality local products and to develop new agri-food products," said Mr. Brown. "By buying Nova Scotia products, we create more jobs here at home and help the economy to grow." He also stated he has an open-door policy for anyone with new ideas for the agri-business. -30- Contact: Susan Horne 902-424-6734 trp Apr. 14, 1997 - 11 a.m.
