ENVIRONMENT--YOUTH CORPS SUMMER BATTLE PLAN ANNOUNCED

From the Cape Breton Highlands to the Fundy shore, from the
Eastern shore to the French shore, members of the Nova Scotia
Youth Conservation Corps will be battling across these areas this
summer to protect the environment.
The conservation corps will be tackling a number of projects with
community partners throughout the province to help in the
protection, management and promotion of a healthy environment for
Nova Scotia.
The projects range from fish habitat improvements along the
Sackville, Cornwallis and North Aspey rivers to development of
portions of the Trans-Canada Trail System. Surveying purple
loosestrife infestations along the Shubie canal system,
tree-planting in Pictou County and promoting the solid waste
management plan in almost all areas of the province are some of
the other projects that will occupy summer days for this youthful
force of environmental soldiers.
Although the corps is deployed in teams of four for most of the
summer, all members will come together Aug. 21 to tackle their
No. 1 enemy: litter. The corps will co-ordinate a "trash bash" in
areas throughout the province as a way of heightening public
attention and involvement in putting litter in its place.
The corps' battle plan is being financed by the Nova Scotia
Department of the Environment, Nova Scotia Economic Development
and Tourism, Human Resources Development Canada and by community
partners throughout the province. Additional funding is being
sought from private firms. The money will be used to pay the 150
workers in the regular summer program and to support the creation
of another 64 positions through a Youth Environmental Challenge
Program.

Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. on May 16.
The Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps is a program of the
Department of the Environment that provides skills training and
outdoor environmental employment for Nova Scotians between the
ages 17 and 24. Since it was formed in 1989, the corps has
provided these types of opportunities to over 1,040 young people.
