SPORT/RECREATION--SNEAKER DAY 97 -- IT'S FIT TO BE TRIED! ----------------------------------------------------------------- Sneakers will be the order of the day at the House of Assembly tomorrow, Friday, May 9. Sport and Recreation Minister, Alan Mitchell, is putting his best foot forward, and is encouraging his colleagues to mark Sneaker Day 97 with the appropriate footwear. "We want to encourage everyone to get going and get active," said Mr. Mitchell. "We all have a role to play in promoting healthy, active living, and this is an opportunity for all members to truly bear their soles." Sneaker Day is part of a national, community-based SummerActive campaign designed to raise awareness about healthy living. The campaign is aimed at those who are inactive, and encourages Canadians to get fit and have fun. Since the creation of SummerActive in May of 1996, more than 4 million Canadians have been involved. Participants of all ages and abilities have taken part in more than 15,000 events across the country. The SummerActive program is supported by a number of partners in the community including: ParticipACTION; Active Living -- Go for Green! Active Living Canada; the Canadian Cycling Association; Canadian Parks Partnership; Canadian Wheelchair Basketball Association; Canadian Intramural Recreation Association (CIRA); Girl Guides of Canada; Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada; Osteoporosis Society of Canada; RCMP; Softball Canada and Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD). The SummerActive campaign also enhances the policies and programs of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission by making Nova Scotians aware that it's fun to be fit. -30- Contact: Barbara Klass 902-424-7658 trp May 8, 1997 - 4:45 p.m.
