JUSTICE--REGISTRAR OF JOINT STOCK COMPANIES NAMED

  Catherine E. Smith has been appointed as Registrar of Joint
  Stock Companies, effective Nov. 15, 1995.
  
  Ms. Smith has been acting registrar since June of this year,
  and brings a strong legal and managerial background to the
  position.
  
  "Ms. Smith's background in both the legal profession and in
  the area of corporate services will serve her well in this
  new position, and I'm confident in her abilities to provide
  excellent leadership as she takes on this new challenge,"
  said Justice Minister Bill Gillis.
  
  Ms. Smith is a graduate of the Dalhousie University Law
  School and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Saint
  Mary's University in 1981. She was called to the Nova Scotia
  Bar in 1986.
  
  Before coming to the registry, she was employed as manager
  of corporate services at McInnes, Cooper & Robertson, and
  was an associate with the firm of Burton, Lynch, Armsworthy,
  Ward & O'Neill.
  
  Ms. Smith serves on the Saint Mary's University alumni
  executive, and is on the Board of Governors of the Atlantic
  School of Theology.
  
  The Registry of Joint Stock Companies receives information
  relating to companies and non-profit societies, and makes
  this information available to the public. The office
  receives registrations of business names, sole
  proprietorships, partnerships and corporations. It also
  administers the Companies Act, The societies Act and related
  legislation.
