HOUSING/MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS--SUMMER PROGRAM CREATES 340 JOBS
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Nova Scotia's public housing will soon receive a facelift under a
$1.3-million summer job program.

Jim Smith, minister of housing and municipal affairs, today
announced the creation of about 340 summer jobs for students and
other unemployed. Those hired will spruce up the 12,000 public
housing units throughout the province. The work will involve
light maintenance and landscaping.

"The program has two benefits: it is creating much-needed jobs
and at the same time improving our housing stock right across the
province," said Mr. Smith.

Part of the funding for this program comes from the Department of
Economic Development and Tourism's Provincial Employment Program.

Most of the jobs will begin May 20 and run for 16 weeks.
Applications are available at the 18 regional housing
authorities, Canada and Student Employment Centres and Access
Nova Scotia Centres throughout Nova Scotia. The deadline for
applications is May 23.
